Heritage Food, Prepared for Everyday Well-being.

Obom’s Kitchen is our culinary exploration into the foods you grew up with. We believe that caring for your health should never mean abandoning the recipes, cultural traditions, and family flavors you love.

The Jollof Rice Story

During clinical work, our founder, Dr Samantha, noticed a distressing trend. Patients of West African, Caribbean, and South Asian heritage were routinely handed generic diet leaflets that demonized traditional carbohydrates—plantains, yams, cassava, and rice—as inherently unhealthy.

The advice was simple and cold: to be healthy, they were told to abandon family recipes and replace them with unfamiliar foods they didn’t enjoy. For many, this felt like an eviction from their own dining tables, turning family mealtimes into sources of anxiety, shame, and isolation.

Dr Samantha knew the problem was not the cultural food itself, but the lack of understanding of traditional cooking wisdom and balance. Traditional heritage dishes can be prepared, paired, and savored in ways that support sustained daytime energy, joy, and lasting wellness.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

Supported by Innovate UK

Our food preparation methods and metabolic recipe models are not just theories. Obom's Kitchen has received support from Innovate UK (the UK's innovation agency) to test and validate how specific cooking techniques and ingredient combinations reduce the glycemic index (GI) of traditional West African and heritage meals.

Our "Understand Your Food" Philosophy

Rather than eliminating heritage foods, we teach you how to work with their biochemistry. This connects directly to the Weight Wellness Pathway framework:

Gentle Preparation

Traditional methods of slow cooking and allowing starches like rice or yams to cool naturally creates gentle fibers that support digestive ease and lasting satiety.

Flavor & Acid Balance

Fresh citrus, aromatic vinegars, rich tomato stew bases, and natural herbs slow digestion pleasantly while making every bite vibrant and flavorful.

Thoughtful Pairing

Enjoying protein and wholesome vegetable elements alongside carbohydrates helps smooth your energy curve, preventing mid-afternoon fatigue.

Joy as Essential Health

True well-being must feel sustainable and joyful. Deprivation causes stress, but eating culturally rooted meals with loved ones restores genuine vitality.

Recipes & Community Updates

At this lean stage, Obom’s Kitchen is not an online store or recipe blog. We are currently sharing these culinary-wellness insights directly with participants in Steady and our community email.
